Julie Mehretu: Drawing Into Painting

This was the first book of Julie's work and it coincided with her first solo show at a major museum. The book was designed with Andrew Blauvelt, Design Director at the Walker Art Center. We decided on a book format that would be french folded to allow for the inclusion of Julie's reference and inspiration tears that are used in the creation of her paintings (mostly newspaper clippings). The Book is composed of gate folds as well to avoid trapping the artwork in the gutters of the book. The details on the opening spreads show the artwork at the actual size they appeared in the gallery. This was the only way to share the level of detail that appears in each of Julie's paintings.

The plate pages are printed in Hexachrome.
